This one wasn't intentional. I'm an optimist much to the dismay of everyone I know. Chris is a pessimist which tends to annoy people he knows. That only left one other main character for the punchline. I'm not saying this is my actual opinion of Jim's intelligence. He was simply the only one left to take the "kick me" sign for this joke.
